Detailed itinerary

 

Day 1 :  Arrival in San Francisco

Welcome to San Francisco, America's most European and most tolerant city.

San Francisco has so much to offer... Why not start yout trip with a visit to the observation tower of the de Young Museum with its unparalleled panoramic views of the city?

Or take an evening tour of Alcatraz prison, a unique and fascinating experience.

Day 2 :  San Francisco  

Be sure to take a ride on one of San Francisco's historic cable cars: the most iconic San Francisco experience! The best time is early in the morning, before rush hour.

The children will enjoy watching the sea lions at Fisherman's Wharf or the marine animals at Aquarium of the Bay.

At the end of the day, why not walk across the Golden Gate Bridge? Sunset over the bridge is a moment of pure magic!

Day 3 :  San Francisco / Monterey  (136 km / 01h35)

Spend one last morning enjoying San Francisco and its many attractions before picking up your motorhome between 1 and 4 p.m.

Take the scenic Highway 1 along the California coast, considered by some to be the most beautiful coastline in the world.

Your destination is Monterey, a typical Californian coastal town.

If there's one thing you shouldn't miss in Monterey, it's the scenic "17-Mile Drive". This private road passes through Pebble beach, one of the richest and most famous residential communities on the west coast.

Day 4 :  Monterey / Pismo Beach  (256 km / 02h29)

Your roadtrip continues towards Pismo Beach, a small city known for its beaches and sand dunes.

You spend the day exploring the most scenic section of Route 1, between Carmel and San Simeon, passing through Big Sur along the way. You will want to stop often to admire the scenery.

At the end of the day you head for downtown Pismo Beach, where you can take a stroll along the beach after enjoying a good meal in one of the many local restaurants.

Day 5 :  Pismo Beach / Los Angeles  (250 km / 02h39)

Continue your route towards Los Angeles, city of angels.

It's a well-known fact: L.A. beaches are legendary. Santa Monica Beach has a chic "resort" feel and is a good place to do some shopping. 

Or you can head to Venice Beach, L.A.'s artists community, for more of a bohemian atmosphere.

Day 6 :  Los Angeles  

Today you get to take a look behind the scenes with a tour of a Hollywood studio. We recommend Universal Studio for families, or Warner Brothers. 

Along the way, you will have the chance to explore some of the sumptuous neighbourhoods of Beverly Hills, home of the stars.

Day 7 :  Los Angeles / Kingman  (570 km / 05h37)

Spend one last morning enjoying the sights of Los Angeles. 

Today's destination is Kingman, the heart of historic Route 66.

Your route will take you through several classic small towns along Route 66 with their diners, motels, old gas stations and vintage advertisements.

Day 8 :  Kingman / Grand Canyon  (275 km / 02h41)

Today you head for the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, the most impressive section of this natural wonder.

Begin your discovery of the Grand Canyon at Mather Point, which offers the most spectacular views of the park. Despite the crowds of visitors, an awed silence reigns before the majesty of the Grand Canyon.

Day 9 :  Grand Canyon  

While in Grand Canyon National Park, you won't want to miss hiking Hermit Road.

Along this scenic route, which is accessible on foot or by shuttle bus, be sure to visit Mohave Point. This designated viewpoint offers panoramic views towards the west; you will have the impression that you are floating above the Grand Canyon.

Desert View Drive at sunset is another must-see experience of extraordinary beauty.  Highlights include Lipan Point, with its spectacular and colourful vistas.

Day 10 :  Grand Canyon / Monument Valley  (288 km / 03h06)

The adventure continues towards Monument Valley, home of some of the most iconic landscapes of the Far West and Hollywood westerns.

Be sure to take the "Monument Valley scenic drive" and discover the beauty of this legendary region. However, the unpaved road is not recommended for motorhomes. You would be better off hiring a local Navajo guide who will take you on a tour in his jeep.

John Ford Point is the best viewpoint in the park, and the most accessible. There is no reason to miss it!

Day 11 :  Monument Valley / Lake Powell  (212 km / 02h14)

Today you set out for Lake Powell, an area of great natural beauty where the lake's blue-green color is in stark contrast to the red-orange hues of the surrounding canyonlands.

Just before you reach the lake, be sure to stop at Horseshoe Bend, where you can take a 30-minute hike offering breathtaking views of the Colorado River.

At Lake Powell, the combinations of light, pattern and colour found in Antelope Canyon will leave you speechless.

Day 12 :  Lake Powell / Bryce Canyon  (233 km / 02h26)

Today you spend the morning enjoying Lake Powell and its idyllic beaches.

Later you will head for Bryce Canyon, one of the most spectacular national parks in the American Southwest.

Day 13 :  Bryce Canyon  

Bryce Canyon National Park is a forest of tall, thin spires of sandstone ("hoodoos") scattered across a giant natural amphitheater.

Hiking enthusiasts won't want to miss Queen's Garden, where they will be able to take a close look at the rocky columns and arches. It's like being in another world.

Sunset Point offers breathtaking views of the canyon amphitheatre, with the best light occurring at sunset.

Day 14 :  Bryce Canyon / Zion  (133 km / 01h42)

Your adventure continues in the direction of Zion National Park.

The area was named by the early Mormon settlers, for whom Zion meant "paradise", a name inspired by the unearthly beauty of the surroundings. 

Take the Zion - Mount Carmel Highway, preferably from east to west for the best views of the canyon.

You will want to stop at Canyon Overlook to admire the singular beauty of this remarkable park.

Day 15 :  Zion / Las Vegas  (272 km / 02h44)

Today you head for that most eccentric of Western US destinations, Las Vegas.

Begin your stay by visiting the top of the Stratosphere for a panoramic view of the city.

And be sure to enjoy the impressive Bellagio fountain show, an iconic Las Vegas attraction.

Your campground is conveniently located right in downtown Las Vegas.

Day 16 :  Las Vegas  

Consider yourself warned: nothing is too big, nothing is too beautiful. After all, you are in Las Vegas, where anything goes... or almost anything.

Today you will explore The Strip, a stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard lined with a multitude of flamboyant casinos and resort hotels. The most impressive of these are the Wynn, Treasure Island and The Venetian.

Day 17 :  Las Vegas / Mammoth Lakes  (507 km / 05h10)

Today's destination is Mammoth Lakes, a tourist resort nestled high in the mountains on the edge of a clear alpine lake. 

Your drive will be a study in contrasts as you leave the desert for the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

The scenery is sure to take your breath away.

Day 18 :  Mammoth Lakes / Yosemite  (167 km / 02h35)

This morning you will take the famous Tioga Road, a spectacular mountain pass that crosses the northern part of Yosemite National Park, today's destination.

Along the way, take a detour to Bodie, a legendary Old West ghost town, remnant of the gold rush. The town's history is fascinating.

Important note: If you are travelling between October and May, note that Tioga Road will be closed due to heavy snowfall. In this case, we will need to modify your itinerary so that you cross the park further to the south.

Day 19 :  Yosemite  

This morning, make your way to Yosemite Valley. Turn right at the first intersection to reach "Tunnel View", a scenic overview with spectacular panoramic views of the entire park.

Families and the less athletically inclined will enjoy the trail leading to Yosemite Falls, an easy 30-minute walk through a dreamlike setting.

Be sure to take the winding mountain road to Glacier Point, where you will find the most spectacular views of Yosemite Valley to be found in the park.

Day 20 :  Yosemite / San Francisco  (193 km / 02h50)

Today you head back to San Francisco, where you have to drop off your motorhome before 11 a.m.
