In planning your trip, it is important to understand your different options for paying U.S. national parks entry fees.
In general, the most economical way to visit multiple national parks is to purchase an annual America the Beautiful - National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass, at a cost of US $80, in the first park you visit.
The pass is valid for one year from the date of purchase and provides unlimited access to, and use of, all national parks and federal recreational sites during your trip. It covers a total of four adults including the pass holder (children under 16 are admitted free), provided that the other three adults are passengers in the same vehicle as the pass holder. If there are more than four adults in the vehicle, the extra adults will be required to pay the individual entry fee.
The annual pass is non-transferable and non-refundable, and the pass holder will need to show photo identification at each park.
Note that some parks charge per vehicle, in which case there is no limit on the number of adults on board the vehicle.
The annual pass is worth buying, since average national park entry fees are around US $10 per person or $20 per vehicle. In other words, the pass pays for itself if you visit 4 parks or more.
To simplify the purchase of your pass, be sure to have US $80 in cash when you visit your first national park.
